As wandering County Road 521 nears downtown Houston it transforms into Almeda Road, which has become one of the city's major Southside thoroughfares. The Almeda Road Area occupies a unique place in Houston history, literally and figuratively, located as it is between the Third Ward community to its east and the affluent Houston Heights Area to its west.
Almeda Road passes through the Astrodome Area, where most of the area's current 13,832 residents are located. This area includes the commercial and residential developments located in what was a virtually empty part of south Houston before the opening of the Astrodome in 1965. Bulldozers quickly cut through the treeless plain and large tracts of undeveloped land were laid out for major investments.
Plaza Del Oro was the largest project, a mixed-use development by Shell Oil Company that was scaled back to a few technical and medical office buildings and many apartments and condominiums. Renamed the Reliant Arena Complex, complete with a new stadium/events center and pending renovations to the Astrodome, new economic life if pumping back into the "eighth wonder of the world" and the neighborhoods and businesses created in its wake.
The Almeda Road Community runs from Loop 610 to downtown Houston with most of the residential development occurring between Bissonnett Street and Old Spanish Trail. The majority of residential units in the area are multi-family or single-family attached. Staffordshire is a subdivision in the northern part of the area that is primarily single-family.
In May 2008, the average sales price for a single family home or condo in Almeda, TX was $113,250. This information is gleaned from the MLS, and while deemed reliable, is not guaranteed.|
