Fifteen miles south of Houston, at the mouth of the San Jacinto River, the City of Deer Park holds a distinction of which other Texas cities can only dream. Deer Park is known as "The birthplace of Texas" and makes no bones about promoting it. What chamber of commerce could resist? In truth decisive Texas' decisive victory in the Texas Revolution "The Battle of San Jacinto" took place just north of the Deer Park.
While close may only count in horseshoes and hand grenades, Deer Park is well, close enough. The San Jacinto Battleground Museum and Historical Park is tucked neatly into of the pristine bays of the San Jacinto River directly on Deer Park's northeast side. Today, Deer Park is as much committed to its history as to its future, ranking as one of the Houston Areas most diverse and thriving suburbs.
History aswide, but Deer Park also has the three most important words in real estate on its side: location, location, location! As far as the Houston economy is concerned, Deer Park is where "the rubber meets the road" interlinking the Houston Port Authority with the shipping, packaging and oil refining industries on which it depends. Some 32,000 people call Deer Park home.
This mid-sized suburb is about as traditional a community as they come these days. With lower taxes, a lower overall cost of living and cheap land, Deer Park has become one of Houston's more affordable suburbs. The area has become especially popular with young families and Houston commuters who seek a slower more relaxed pace at the end of the workday.
In addition to the overall intensive growth of Houston's petrochemical industry, Deer Park's thriving economy is also fueled by the growth of businesses along Highway 225 and the recently completed Sam Houston Tollway.
Deer Park home seekers will find a diverse and plentiful stock of affordably priced, single-family homes, most within master-planned communities. Apartments, duplexes, townhouses and condominiums are not as plentiful here as in other areas of Houston. In May 2008, the average sales price for a single family home or condo in Deer Park, TX was $160,629. This information is gleaned from the MLS, and while deemed reliable, is not guaranteed.
Most Deer Park pupils attend schools in Deer Park Independent School District, with the balance served by La Porte Independent School District.
