Wallis is at the junction of the Southern Pacific and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroads ten miles southeast of Sealy in Austin County, around 42 miles west of downtown Houston. The town is home to approximately 1,300 residents. The community was first known as Bovine Bend, and a post office by that name was established in 1873. After 1880, when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway constructed its Galveston-Brenham spur through the vicinity, the settlement became known as Wallis Station, in honor of J. E. Wallis, director of the Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe. The name of the post office was changed to Wallis Station in 1886 and to Wallis in 1911. In 1973, Wallis was officially incorporated as a city. Featured events in the city include the Wallis Fine Rides Autofest, held in October each year. Main Street is lined with checkered flags, and the air is filled with the mellow sound of beefy engines as car lovers from all around come rolling into town for the Autofest. Admission is free to the public. In addition, the City hosts a City-Wide Garage Sale, held the first Saturday in November. Thats the day over 100 households hold individual garage sales throughout the city. Wallis is served by the Brazos Independent School District. Additional educational opportunities exist with Wharton Junior College and University of Houston (Ft. Bend) located approximately twenty-five miles from town. Houston Baptist University, along with Rice University, are within fifty miles of town.
