AS little as 20 years ago, the mere mention of the City of Conroe conjured images of the boonies: dense forests, endless prairies, farm and ranchlands. Today, Conroe is the northern gateway to the Houston Metro Community that has growth to its doorstep. As the country seat of Montgomery County, Conroe has embraced its status as the premiere Houston bedroom community while never losing touch with for the small town grace and character that have always distinguished it. With a population now nearing 40,000, Conroe too has seen its share of growth, transforming this former turn of the century "boom town" into a thriving refuge for urban professionals from Houston and those employed in Huntsville to the north. As of year 2000 statistics, there were 13,145 households in Conroe. Conroe actively committed itself to a downtown revitalization effort, developing and implementing a plan to revitalize its downtown. New building facades, elegant streetscape improvements, and renovated public buildings have resulted in an influx of retail stores and other businesses. An interest in cultural revitalization followed. Using the city's historic town square as a beacon, downtown Conroe is now home to The Conroe Symphony Orchestra, Crighton Theatre, Wilson's Performing Arts, Lampros Gallery, Montgomery County, and Performing Arts. New residential development has mostly occurred on the outskirts of the Conroe City limits. As a result of the explosive housing demand, the area boasts a diverse variety of homes. From renovated downtown cottages to ranch estates with bonus acreage and livestock allowances to fishing villages on nearby Lake Conroe, there's a home here for every taste and budget. Out in the country and near the lake there are many beautiful properties. One such development is Teaswood - 3/4 acres and up home sites just minutes from Highway 45. Horses are allowed on 2.5 acres and up. The median income for a household in Conroe is around $37,200. The low cost of living and low taxes add to Conroe's popularity.
