State Highway 6 is becoming one of the most important thoroughfares in western Harris County. The 70-mile long multiple-lane freeway is a primary interconnect between Houston's fast growing northwest corridor and the major Shipping Channel cities to the southeast. As far as Houston's "hub and spoke" highway system is concerned, Hwy 6 resembles a half loop that, if developed to completely encircle the city, would easily be the largest metropolitan loop in the country. The highway weaves through Harris, Ft. Bend and Brazoria Counties, crossing nearly every major freeway in the region on its way from FM 1960 to its terminus at Gulf Freeway I 45 at La Marque. Beginning where FM 1960 ends at US 290 near the Copperfield, Cypress-Fairbanks area, Hwy 6, aka Old Addicks-Howell, heads due south through the Addicks-Park Ten Area where it crosses I 10 east of Katy. From here the route continues south crossing scenic Buffalo Bayou and Westheimer Rd. through the Alief Area on to Sugar Land where Hwy 6 begins a lazy easterly arc, crossing State Hwy 59, and continuing through Missouri City, Manvel and Alvin until it joins I 45 south of La Marque. The highway serves close to 200,000 people who live along its course.
