Northwest Houston is a diverse and rapidly growing collection towns, communities and businesses bordered and interconnected by FM 1960. Northwest Houston is approximately 25 miles northwest of Houston's central business district, 70 miles from Galveston and encompasses George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The western arc of residential FM 1960 begins with the Champions area between I-45 and Highway 249 â largely considered the northwest area's first large scale subdivision. The remainder of the region including Jersey Village, Spring and Cypress-Fairbanks is second only to Katy in new home construction and business growth in the HoustonâSugar LandâBaytown Metropolitan Area. The area is home to more than 350,000 people living in over 100 residential subdivisions. Most of this population is concentrated within a three-mile radius of FM 1960. Residents live mostly in single-family homes located on individual lots in subdivisions. Approximately 625 families are moving into the area every month. Homes range in price from $39,000 to $50,000. The area is heavily forested and its gently rolling terrain is drained by hundreds of scenic streams, creeks and bayous. As little as thirty years back, this area was the country. Dominated by undeveloped ranches, farms and woodlands, the area was a haven for golfers, farmers and early northside settlers. Developers noted the intersection of several farm-to-market roads, namely FM 1960. Today, more than 250 square miles are enclosed within the triangle formed by FM-1960, US 290 and US 59. Major employers in the Northwest Houston area are located predominantly along FM 1960. Some of these include airline and aviation industries, several major school districts, Goodyear, Tenneco, Chicago Bridge and Iron, Drilco, Plains Machinery, Houston Natural Gas, Southwestern Bell and numerous other light industrial and manufacturing plants. Additionally, Route FM-1960 between FM-149 and Interstate 45 has become a center of commercial activity. Numerous office buildings, shopping centers, restaurants and residential subdivisions line both sides of the busy thoroughfare.
