In the far northeastern corner of Harris County, five miles beyond the orbit of Houston's outermost loop thoughts of traffic, smog and stress begins to dissolve, overtaken by lakes and forests dotted with quaint "villages". That sense of "awe" is known well by the 65,000 residents who call Kingwood home. The brainchild of residential development pioneer Friendsworth Development Company, Kingwood is the largest master-planned community in Harris County; it's the second largest within the entire Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown Metropolitan Area. Built in 1970 Kingwood quickly became a flagship community for other quality low-impact subdivisions around the country. Sort of a trendsetter for the smart growth and green building concepts that would took another 20 years for other developers to catch on. Central to Kingwood's "Livable Forest" design are its trees. Lots and lots of trees. 14,000 acres to be exact. Kingwood's forest is indeed the unifying principle that surrounds and connects Kingwood's 27 subdivisions or "villages" as the locals call them. It is the forest that shades Kingwood's ample parks and greenbelts and lines its award winning golf courses and adjacent Lake Houston. It's obvious this community appreciates full well the aesthetic and commercial value that old growth trees, much less forests, add to a property. Kingwoods wooded surroundings and green-friendly master-plan have helped Kingwood grow into a charming small town, where residents find the ideal combination of new homes, amenities, conveniences and outstanding schools all close to home. A large and varied selection of affordable housing stock puts Kingwood within reach of a diverse range of homeowners. With its generous amenities program, Kingwood continues to appeal to residents of all ages. As expected, Kingwood's stock of 29,351 homes is primarily residential and 80 percent are owner-occupied. Kingwood pupils residing in Harris County attend the Humble Independent School District. Kingwood High School serves the area, and Kingwood Park High School will open in 2007. Students residing in Montgomery County attend the New Caney Independent School District. Small portions of North Woodland Hills, as well as the Kings Manor and Oakhurst developments, are located in Montgomery County. Kingwood is served by three middle schools: Kingwood Middle School, Creekwood Middle School and Riverwood Middle School. Starting in August of 2007, Kingwood Middle School students will attend Kingwood Park High School and Creekwood and Riverwood middle schools will continue to attend Kingwood High. In addition to the high schools and middle schools, Kingwood is served by nine Humble ISD elementary schools. These schools are Bear Branch Elementary, Deerwood Elementary, Elm Grove Elementary, Foster Elementary, Greentree Elementary, Hidden Hollow Elementary, Shadow Forest Elementary, Willow Creek Elementary, and Woodland Hills Elementary. Private schools in Kingwood include Northeast Christian Academy, Christian School of Kingwood, and St. Martha Catholic School. Kingwood College is two-year community college that serves the area and it is part of the North Harris/Montgomery Community College District. Houston METRO operates a Park and Ride location off of West Lake Houston Parkway in Kingwood to provide commuters with an alternative to driving themselves downtown.
