Located at the intersection of FM 2100 and 1960, Huffman is an unincorporated area deep in the piney woods of eastern Harris County. It may physically be only 40 miles from downtown Houston; but in Huffman, the state of mind is worlds away. First settled by a local trapper, David Huffman in 1839, Huffman quickly established itself as a dependable eastern trading post. A post office was later established in 1888 and two blacksmith shops were made brisk work of mending and bending horseshoes. The Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway came through the community in the early 1900s, opening the speck of a town to the trading possibilities beyond. One of Huffman's chief draws is Lake Houston which comprises the city's western border and is the chief source of water for the City of Houston and surrounding areas. An earthen bridge carrying FM 1960 is Huffman's chief connection to the Greater Humble Area and Metropolitan Houston. Formed by the damming of the San Jacinto River, Lake Houston offers excellent opportunities for swimming, fishing, boating and skiing. With access from numerous public boat ramps, fishing enthusiasts are drawn to more than a dozen varieties of fish found in the lake. Boating enthusiasts find the lake supports excellent depths to accommodate powerboats, ski boats, bass boats and jet skis. Human-powered, shallow-draft vessels such as canoes and kayaks are popular for navigating the breathtaking scenery and native wildlife of the lake, the San Jacinto River and Spring Creek. Huffman residents are served by The Huffman Independent School District with four schools.
