From its historic roots as a settlement for freed slaves and veterans from the Texas Revolution to its prominence this century, as a powerful industrial complex, Channelview's powerful influence continues to be felt across the Houston Ship Channel. Bordered by Buffalo Bayou to the south and Interstate 10 to the north, the Channelview Area has a population of around 29,685 people.
Once a labyrinth of dense forestland and few inhabitants, Channelview's proximity to Coastal traffic by way of the Houston Shipping Channel has, within the space of 100 years transformed it into a modern industrial player in the region. Channelview is considered a member of the North Channel area--a collection of small communities in the northern half of the Houston Shipping Channel industrial complex. Most residents of Channelview work in the shipping channel industry or make the 30-minute commute to downtown Houston.
