Manvel is a city in Brazoria County, Texas; the population was 3,046 at the 2000 census. Manvel and the larger Manvel Area, is one of the fastest growing regions of Brazoria County. Located 20 miles south of downtown Houston at the intersection of State Highway 288 and State Highway 6, the city's excellent location have made it a historically popular place for setting up house or business. Mostly a rural farming community, the city of Manvel officially "arrived" On September 8, 1931, when the Texas Oil Company struck oil in the city and Manvel became a rich oil-producing community. A high percentage of residents are still employed in some facet of Houston's enormous oil and natural gas industry, though Manvel is becoming increasingly popular with Houston commuters as well as those employed in the Shipping Industry. Manvel's close proximity to Hobby Airport (10 minutes), the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Rail line as well as the numerous Gulf Coast attractions such as Galveston Island, Kemah and NASA make it ideal for business and families. The city of Manvel enjoys strong support from the non-profit Manvel Economic Development Corporation, which is committed to supporting residential and commercial growth in the area. As of the 2000 census, there were 1,085 households in Manvel. Students in Manvel attend schools in the Alvin Independent School District including E.C. Mason Elementary School, Manvel Junior High School and Manvel High School.
