Alief is a large ethnically diverse community on Bray's Bayou in western Harris County on the far southwest side of downtown Houston. Mostly within the city limits of Houston, Texas, a small portion of this once rural community is in unincorporated Harris County. This portion of Alief is primarily governed at the county level. Comprised of farms, ranches, a general store, and churches, Alief endured devastating floods near the turn of the century, after which rice became the Alief's principle crop after 1900, enhancing the areas economic base. Alief was remained independent until it was annexed by the City of Houston in the 1970's. Despite becoming part of the metropolis and heavily urbanized during the 1970's and 1980's, Alief retains much of its character and country appeal. Today, the Alief Area is a thriving collection of medium-sized subdivisions with a population of 97,889. Moderately priced homes and large affordably priced apartments and condominiums comprise a diversity of housing options priced to meet the area's low to middle income budget. The areas diverse ethnicity is reflected in the stores found in shopping centers lining the areas major thoroughfares. The Alief Independent School District serves the area.
