Worcester is the second-largest city in Massachusetts and major cultural and employment hub city in central Massachusetts with major activity in manufacturing, insurance, and transportation. The city is set on a series of hills overlooking the Blackstone River, and Lake Quinsigamond lies at the eastern boundary of the city. Worcester is noted for its fine educational and cultural facilities. Among the institutions of higher education are Worcester State College, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Assumption College, Clark University, The College of the Holy Cross, the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and Quinsigamond Community College. These institutions contribute a significant student population to the city. Educational and cultural activities are not limited to college campuses though; Worcester boasts numerous other facilities dedicated to the arts and history; the headquarters of the American Antiquarian Society, with a research library specializing in Americana is located in Worcester.

Other places of cultural interest include the Worcester Art Museum, with a wide-ranging collection of Western and Asian art; the Worcester Historical Museum, emphasizing the citys industrial achievements; the Higgins Armory, a museum of arms and armor, and the New England Science Center, with collections on the biological and physical sciences. The city also hosts the Worcester Music Festival which dates back to 1858. Additionally, the Worcester Centrum is a major concert and events venue.

Incorporated as a city in 1848, Worcester covers roughly 38 square miles and has a population of 167,000 residents spread out in both a dense and vibrant downtown, and in residential suburbs of charming neighborhoods and lakeside homes.
