Located 13 miles southwest of Chicago's Loop, 10 minutes from Midway Airport and covering an area of 4.1 square miles, Bridgeview's motto is "A Well Balanced Community," illustrating the village's split between retail, industrial and service-oriented businesses.
The U.S. Census in 2000 reported the population of Bridgeview as 15,335. Bridgeview was a farming community until the 1920s when farming began to decline. In 1924, developers began to build homes between 71st and 75th Streets, and many residents worked at the large Corn Products International plant in neighboring Bedford Park.
Though the Great Depression slowed down development of the area, by 1936, the Bartlett real estate company had resumed building houses. Local residents chose the name Bridgeview because of the view of the area from the Harlem Avenue Bridge. In 1947, voters decided to incorporate as a village; at that time the population was approximately 500.
Today, Bridgeview is home to a well-known Moslem mosque, has a total of five schools, (two of them private), and boasts 70 acres of park land with six baseball/softball fields, three tennis courts, six jogging paths, six playgrounds, one outdoor pool, one outdoor skating rink and one indoor skating rink.
The newly-built Bridgeview Stadium is home to the Chicago Fire professional soccer team, and the Bridgeview Sports Dome is a climate-controlled sports arena that boasts a double deck, 46-tee driving range, plus chipping and putting greens. The facility can be reserved for indoor soccer, softball and football practices.
To shop, residents can visit Harlem Avenue's retail corridor, as well as the Bridgeview Court shopping plaza. Ford City shopping mall is two miles west of Bridgeview. Bridgeview contains a variety of split-level, bungalow and Cape Cod residences, and real estate remains very reasonably priced.
In June 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Bridgeview, IL was $292,500. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
