A beautiful village that's known for its award-winning schools, excellent shopping, outstanding recreational opportunities, and scenic forest preserves, the town of Libertyville is located 35 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. Founded in the early 1830s and incorporated in 1882 with a population of 500, Libertyville currently has a population of just over 20,000 (2004). U.S. Route 41 and Interstate 94 provide convenient access to Chicago. Housing styles include modern ranches, older Victorians, Cape Cods and colonials. For recreation, villagers can spend some time at Libertyville's modern 160,000 square-foot sports complex on Highway 45. There, they can burn off some calories at the challenging climbing wall, perfect their strokes at the golf learning center, and get fit at the aerobics and fitness centers. They can also relax at the village's more than 600 acres of parks, take some art and music classes at the David Adler Cultural Center, play a round of golf at one of the area's many golf courses, and do some shopping in the historical downtown Heritage shopping district. Summertime activities include the Libertyville Days Festival featuring food vendors and carnival rides; a farmers market; lunch and music in Cook Park; and the Libertyville Days Parade. Students in Libertyville receive excellent educations. Younger students attend both District 70 and District 73 schools, and high school students attend Libertyville Community High School District 128, which has 2,515 students. These schools rank above the state averages in test results and in academic achievement. Area colleges include the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Lake Forest College and Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Cook Memorial Library serves the residents of Libertyville. It contains over 200,000 volumes, and is centrally located on Milwaukee Avenue in the village's downtown area.
