Lithonia is nestled in the southeastern part of Dekalb County. Located in the heart of the Georgia granite district, the city's name means "City of Stone." Lithonia is just of off Interstate 20 and is 18 miles from the city of Atlanta, making commuting to the city a breeze. The city is also convenient to nearby Rockdale County which is home to several major companies and industrial parks and some of the state's largest employers.
Lithonia residents will enjoy shopping at the recently established The Mall at Stonecrest. The mall is filled with popular retailers and the surrounding area features more stores, restaurants and entertainment options. Nearby Stone Mountain Park offers lots of recreational activities for active families and residents will enjoy socializing with their neighbors at community events throughout the year including Light Up Lithonia, and the Lithonia Summer Concert Series.
Students in the area will attend schools in the Dekalb County Schools System. Lithonia students have received various awards for achievements in academics, athletics and performing arts. The Lithonia Middle School 7th and 8th grade honor band received first place in the Middle School AAAA Division of the All-Star Band Festival. The Lithonia High School boy's basketball team was the Region 7AAAAA champions and came in 3rd place in the state championships. Additionally, students have received numerous awards in math and science.
There are several competitive private schools convenient to the area as well and colleges and universities are just a short drive away. Georgia Perimeter College and Agnes Scott College are located in Dekalb County and boast impressive reputations.
