In Snohomish County, 22 miles east of Everett, is the quaint community of Sultan. Located at the meeting place of the Sultan and Skykomish rivers, the area was settled in the 1880s when gold was discovered in these waters. Because of Sultans position along Highway 2, the town is a thoroughfare for skiers and snowboarders on their way to and from Stevens Pass. During the ski season, Sultan experiences an influx of visitors, who often stop here before traveling the final 38 miles to the winter resort.
