Once a camping and hunting ground of the Pottawatomie, Ottawa, Miami and Cherokee Indians, the village of Bartlett's population has grown from 360 in 1900 to approximately 37,000 in 2003. The community was named after founder Luther Bartlett who offered the Chicago & Pacific Railroad a right-of-way through his forty acres and a train station site, as an inducement to bring the railroad to the town. In 2005, Bartlett's newly-built Town Center opened. Five condominium buildings on the east end of the site will eventually have up to 125 condominium units ranging from 888 to approximately 2,000 square feet in size. Also included within the Town Center are an Italian restaurant, a day spa, a photography shop, a wine store, and other retail establishments.
For recreation, residents can head on over to the Bartlett Hills Golf Club, which is owned by the village. Originally built in 1923, the course was completely remodeled in 1982; more recently, a conversion to bent grass fairways, along with the redesign of various greens, was completed.
Residents can also partake of various activities offered by Arts in Bartlett, Bartlett's new arts council; visit the Bartlett History Museum, located in the Bartlett Village Hall; and take art, music or dance classes, offered by the Bartlett Park District.
Bartlett schools are a part of the Elgin Area School District U-46, which serves an area of 90 square miles in Cook, DuPage and Kane counties. U-46 is the second largest school district in Illinois. The high school graduation rate for the school district is 89 percent.
Housing in Bartlett consists of newer homes as well as more established older homes. Bartlett aspires toward continued and well-controlled growth, with a program that is designed to attract business and industry, primarily along the western edge of the village, and to expand the commercial and industrial tax base. The projected population for the year 2020 is 47,500.
