Rockwall is the county seat of Rockwall County and lies 22 miles east of downtown Dallas on Interstate 30. In 1980, the population of Rockwall was just under 6,000. Today, the numbers have blossomed to 30,000. The once rural community is attracting families from Dallas and beyond to this scenic town on the east shore of Lake Ray Hubbard.

Residents enjoy exceptional fishing, boating and sailing, in addition to the 330 acres of parkland and dedicated natural open space. There are 4 marinas, 3 public boat ramps and a yacht club famous for sailing regattas. The lake looms large over public life in Rockwall. Rockwall gets its name from a geological mystery. When settlers first tried to dig wells in 1851, they discovered underground rock walls. The walls appeared man-made, and the settlers assumed they were ancient barriers. Geologists now believe the walls are a result of weather sand dikes formed along the Balcones Fault Line. Evidence of these rock walls can still be seen at several points throughout the county.
