Bremen was incorporated in 1883 as Kramer, after a local vineyard owner of German descent. However, at his request, the name was later changed to Bremen to pay homage to Bremen, Germany. In 2000, the US Census recorded a population of 4,579 in this Georgia town rooted in German heritage. Known for being a railroad junction, the town has grown to become the largest city in Haralson County. The town is located 43 miles west of Atlanta.
Bremen has experienced tremendous growth in recent years and still continues to unfold as a thriving area, welcoming progress and change. Following the trend of many Atlanta area developments, Bremen is welcoming live-work-play communities and conservation projects, such as Stonebridge Crossing, a mixed-use subdivision. Along with residential development is tremendous commercial growth. Bremen residents can take advantage of a new nearby Super Wal-Mart, plus over 100,000 square feet of additional out-parcels and new retail shops. The growing area features abundant land that is currently being developed for several national chains. Additionally, the Lion Golf Club is in full operation in the area and is considered to be one of the finest golf courses in Georgia.
Students in Bremen are served by four area schools including Jones Elementary, Sewell Middle, Bremen High and Bremen Crossroad Academy. Bremen students are encouraged to strive for academic excellence at it's apparent in their impressive system-wide scores. 89.1% of middle school students met or exceeded standards in math and 94.9 met or exceeded standards in reading. At the high school level 82.9% of the students met or exceeded standards set for Math and 95.5% met or exceeded standards set for English/Language Arts.
