The area that is now the town of Windsor was known only as a "beautiful green valley with sturdy oak trees," with grass that grew as high as the girth on a horse's saddle. The earliest recorded settlers with their families did not arrive until 1851. From the late 1800s through the early 1980s, Windsor was primarily a small farming community. The town was incorporated in 1992. Today the town of Windsor is the newest and one of the fastest growing cities in Sonoma County and the fourth largest town in the county. The population is approximately 25,745 residents. Many of the area's farms have been converted to vineyards, a number of which produce world-class, award-winning wines. Windsor is home to five retail shopping centers, several light industrial and business parks, new office buildings, and many new homes and neighborhoods. Students are served by schools of the Windsor Union School District. The district is compromised of three elementary schools, a charter school--Cali Calmecac, a Two Way Language Immersion School for students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. The school offers a positive social and academic environment with the advantage of native speakers of Spanish and English that enhances cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. Both languages are used for instruction in content areas such as science or math. The district also includes a middle school and high school. Windsor middle school is well-known for its extensive after-school sports program, its exemplary music program and many other innovative programs. It was awarded a California Distinguished School Award in 2001 and the California Gold Bell Award in 2004. In January 2006, the State Superintendent of Instruction and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation selected Windsor High School as one of California's Ten Most Promising High Schools. In addition to public schools, parents have the option of sending their children to a private school, Windsor Christian Academy. There are many parks and recreational activities for residents to consider, including eleven neighborhood parks, community parks, Esposti, Keiser, Hiram Lewis, Pat Elsbree Skate Park and Windsor Town Green with more than fifty-two cumulative acres of picnic grounds, softball fields, soccer fields, basketball courts, BBQ areas and playground areas for children. Windsor is also home to two regional parks, 245 acres of Foothill Regional Park, and Shiloh Regional Park, with 845 acres of picnic areas and trails.
