Discovery Bay, located at the juncture of the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers, was developed as a planned community in the 1970's. It is about 6 miles southwest of Brentwood and about an hour drive from the City of San Francisco. The motto for the city is "Live where you Play" because of the myriad of available water, golfing and sport activities offered in the area.

The recreational possibilities are endless within and around Discovery Bay. There is a country club and eighteen hole championship golf course as well as 1,100 miles of waterways for all types of water sports including fishing, boating, and water-skiing. The area covers a shade under seven square miles in Contra Costa County. Transportation options for the 5,100 residents of Discovery Bay include Highway 4 and Interstate 680, offering access to major employment centers in Livermore, Silicon Valley and the greater East Bay.

Discovery Bay students are served by the Byron Union School District, serving just over 3,800 students.
