The tiny town of Concrete, located in the northeast corner of Skagit County, was first settled in 1871, when the first homesteaders built a community on the west bank of the Baker River. On the east bank, another community soon emerged around the Washington Portland Cement Company. Eventually the two towns combined forces and in 1909, Concrete was born. During the early 1900s, many of the towns wooden buildings were destroyed by fires. Since concrete was readily available here, commercial buildings were reconstructed using this non-flammable material. Three of the oldest wood buildings--the Baker Street Grill, the Assembly of God Church, and the town Hall & Library--survived the fires and are still standing in modern day Concrete.
