A small but quick growing city in Fresno County, Selma has all the charm of a small city with all the convenience of a larger one. Just twenty minutes outside of Fresno via Highway 99, Selma is popular residence for commuters. Home of the Selma Bears, residents of Selma regularly attend high school games to watch with hope as Selma takes on local rivals.

A small, but active, downtown is flanked on either side with two old-fashioned hamburger shops, the former of which remains a drive-in, still a popular hangout for the kids that take advantage of the skate park around the corner. Locals patronize the coffee shops, restaurants and small barber shop in the downtown shopping area. While many of the stores and restaurants have been around a while, recent development has helped Selma become even more of a thriving community.

The self-proclaimed “Raisin Capital of the World,” the largely agricultural community began the same way many of the other cities in this area did, as a meager train stop. For the last thirty years, Selma has celebrated their agricultural roots with the Annual Raisin Festival. Selma produces 93% of the world’s raisins. Not too long after, it became a viable community and the city has continued to grow. Recent developments have ensured ample retail opportunities for residents, while large agricultural estates surround the small town; a golf course sits on its edges.

Selma offers a variety of housing, shaded estates temper the North East side of the city. Fruit stands are abundant Warm summers bring residents out to enjoy Friday night concerts at Lincoln Park downtown. The city hosts a very popular “Mariachi Festival” in Pioneer Village each year; Spanish guitarists and violinists flood the park with their musical prowess while children play in bounce houses and eat snow cones. With a population of roughly 50,000, the small city plays a significant role in the local economy, touted as being the highest city in the county for per capita retail sales.

Despite being a small city, with seven city parks, residents of Selma are afforded the valuable green space other cities lack. Selma hosts the original Sal’s, a popular Mexican restaurant in the Central Valley. The small movie theatre, a popular source of entertainment, offers a cool refuge form the summer heat. Ethnic restaurants are plenty. No more than a gas-tank’s distance to California’s biggest cities, Selma’s desirable cost of living and central location are only a few of its greatest attributes.

In June 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Selma was $161,467. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
