Just five miles south of Fresno, sits the small town of Fowler, a self-proclaimed “best keep secret” of Fresno County. Nestled among agricultural crops, the small rural town is close to Highway 99, the main arterial route through the Central Valley. The community of Fowler is able to maintain a small town atmosphere, with the benefit of being just a few minutes away from the valley’s biggest city. A shaded zoo, two water parks, art museums, three malls and dozens of upscale retail and dining opportunities are all just minutes away. Fowler is just down the road from a number of other “sleeper communities,” like Kingburg, Selma, Sanger, and others.
The city just celebrated its one hundredth celebration of the city’s incorporation; the city was named after a late 19th century senator and rancher, Thomas Fowler.
Fowler hosts a number of events designed to foster community interaction. A car show in Fowler brings community members to the local park every summer; lawn chairs and blankets spread out on the grass, residents enjoy the food booths and retro car show. On the night preceding, residents bring their own cars to participate in the traditional “cruise” through Fowler. Community cohesiveness is abundant and the local residents often champion a good cause as a collective group; to spur donations, every year public officials have a competitive blood drive: the police department vs. the fire department, the aptly-named “Battle of the Badges Blood Drive.” Every year residents gather to watch the annual Christmas tree lighting, a small tradition signifying that the Christmas season is imminent.
With less than 5,000 residents, community members grow up knowing each other’s name. Small class size and an active community make going to school in Fowler a safe and familiar experience. Many of the area’s children walk to school given the size of the small town.
Reasonable real estate taxes and an affordable cost of living have made the area popular location for commuters, students and families. Newer subdivisions offer a close proximity to both schools and local parks; country homes take advantage of the beautiful vineyards and orchards. Given the small size of the city, country homes are located just minutes from downtown Fowler, making it a viable choice for custom homes. More than $2 million in grants have been used to strengthen and sustain the economic development of the small city. As a result, local business and entrepreneurship have flourished.
In June 2008, the average sales price of a single family home or condo in Fowler was $154,940. This information is gathered from MLS sources, and while deemed reliable, is not guaranteed.
