Located 10 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, the Chicago neighborhood of Jefferson Park is bounded by Montrose, Bryn Mawr and Cicero Avenues, and the Metra Milwaukee Road train tracks. Named for Thomas Jefferson and originally known as the "Gateway to Chicago," this community of 44,000 is a popular place to live because of its well-maintained neighborhoods and excellent transportation.
The Kennedy Expressway is just a few minutes away, and for public transportation, residents can take numerous CTA buses that serve the community. They can also travel via the Metra's Union Pacific trains and the O'Hare-Congress-Douglas CTA line. A statue of Thomas Jefferson graces the entrance of the newly-renovated CTA train station.
Jefferson Park contains a variety of housing styles including bungalows, two-flats, Georgian-style homes, ranches, Cape Cods, and older frame homes. There are also condominiums and stately Victorians from the turn-of-the century.
The neighborhood offers many sporting and recreational activities. Jefferson Park (the park) is located at Long and Higgins Avenues in the heart of the community, and contains two baseball fields, one combination football/soccer field, three tennis courts, one playground and a spray pool, and an outdoor swimming pool. Inside the Jefferson Park fieldhouse, residents of all ages participate in arts activities, sports and social groups such as an active teen club and senior citizens club. Other activities include tumbling and gymnastics classes and preschool activities.
Each summer, the Jefferson Park Chamber of Commerce sponsors an outdoor community festival featuring bands and local food vendors. Many Jefferson Park restaurants are family-owned with European-style menus. The popular, newly-renovated Gale Street Inn attracts rib lovers from across the city. The 11,000-square-foot Jefferson Park branch of the Chicago Public Library is located on the corner of Lawrence and London Avenues one block west of Milwaukee Avenue. It features a mix of adult and juvenile materials; special collections include Polish, Spanish language and large print materials.
