An upscale Lake County suburb located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago, Lake Forest boasts stunning architecture, picturesque streets, excellent schools, beautiful ravines and lake bluffs, and a small-town charm that makes it truly a wonderful place to live. The village of 20,000 lies south of Waukegan, on the Lake Michigan shore and covers an area of 16.9 square miles. In terms of housing, the village contains a variety of housing styles including colonial, English, Victorian, Tudor, farm houses and cottage-style homes. The area along Lake Michigan is home to large and extravagant multi-million dollar homes, and is regarded as the most elite section of town. West Lake Forest, between U.S. Highway 41 and Interstate 94, is the newest area of Lake Forest, and contains many large homes built within the last 20 years, as well as those currently being built. Lower-priced bungalows dot the village, and some moderately-priced condominiums sit adjacent to the business district. For recreation, residents can take advantage of the town's 423 acres of playing fields, tennis courts and wildlife areas, as well as two public recreation centers. There is also a 133-acre, 18-hole public golf course and three private golf courses. Forest Park Beach on Lake Michigan has a boat launching area, and the village's Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of programs for residents of all ages including camps, a dance academy, and fitness programs and workshops. In their leisure time, villagers can also take classes at Lake Forest or Barat College, attend a performance of the Lake Forest Symphony or the Camerata Singers of Lake Forest, or shop in the famed Market Square shopping district. Built in 1916 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Market Square was designed by famed architect Howard Van Doren Shaw, and contains a variety of small shops and larger stores. Lake Forest students are served by a number of outstanding public and private elementary, middle and high schools. High school students can attend the public Lake Forest High School, or the privately-run Lake Forest Academy. Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart is a private school for girls.
