Chelmsford, in the Merrimack River Valley of Massachusetts is just 24 miles northwest of Boston, and offers both proximity to other communities and the appeal of a small New England town. There are five public elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school. Students can also attend Nashoba Valley Technical High School in nearby Westford or a charter middle school within Chelmsford.
Additionally, the active town government provides residents with a full-time police department and fire department. Incorporated in 1655, Chelmsford began a "praying town" refuge for Christianized Native Americans. The town grew as a community of agriculture and dairy lands. Later there was brick making and granite quarrying which continues to the present.
The town of Chelmsford features a variety of historic buildings such as the Italianate structure that now houses the Department of Recreation. This and other buildings are preserved by the Chelmsford Center Historic District Commission.
