For years, La Mesa has been thought of as one of San Diego's finest residential communities. It's one of those rare areas where commerce is perfectly separated from the residential neighborhoods, where kids can play freely in the cul-de-sacs and parents know that their neighbors will slow down for them, and where no one has thought to cut down the trees that provide shade to the streets.

La Mesa has several different sections that come together to make it an enjoyable place to live. La Mesa Village is full of tiny shops, perfect for an afternoon of antiquing and visiting the nearby farmers market. Fletcher Parkway, a major thoroughfare, is home to several large shopping complexes that house retail giants like Costco and Kids R Us. Just a block away is Grossmont Center, the area's mall, home to Target, Macy's, and a movie theater. A major hospital is also nearby.

The residences of La Mesa seem secluded, with middle-class homes lining the streets and kids playing in the front yards. Children have plenty to do in this area. The recreation facilities are some of the best in San Diego, including the newly-opened Briercrest Park, with a children's play area and a sensory garden. And the La Mesa Community Center is considered excellent by residents, with great programs for both kids and adults and consistently well-kept facilities.
