A town of only about 2,400 people, Elwood covers 2.7 square miles and is located in Will County near Channahon, Illinois and close to Route 52. Other nearby Illinois towns include Preston Heights (6.3 miles), Rockdale (6.5 miles), Symerton (7 miles), Wilmington (7.7 miles), Joliet (8.3 miles), and Ingalls Park (8.9 miles).
The town is about 40 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. One famous reference to the village of Elwood was made in the well-known Blues Brothers movie. Elwood Blues, brother to Joliet Jake Blues, and played by actor Dan Akroyd, seems to have been named in honor of Elwood, Illinois.
In terms of education, 88.6 percent of residents age 25 and older have attended high school. Students living in Elwood attend one elementary school, one middle school and one high school in Elwood C C School District 203.
