A community that's located in both Will and Grundy counties in northeastern Illinois, the village of Channahon was incorporated in 1961. Channahon is situated 45 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, and its Indian name means "meeting of the waters." Abraham Lincoln was said to have spent the night in a house near the intersection of U.S. Route 6 and Bluff Road.
The town of 11,038 continually strives to maintain quality schools, affordable homes, an excellent recreation system, and active churches and civic organizations. Channahon's mission is as follows, as stated on its website: "Our mission is to strengthen and maintain the Village of Channahon as a family-oriented, attractive community that provides economic diversity, high quality schools, parks and public services for all its residents."
The village has a wide range of affordable housing including single-family homes in older neighborhoods as well as a number of subdivisions that feature a newer mix of single-family homes, townhomes and apartments. According to a 2005 village report, there was steady residential development in 2005. That year, a total of 261 single-family residential permits were issued, and there was over $70,000,000 worth of commercial, industrial and residential construction.
The Three Rivers Public Library District serves the residents of Channahon. It features a library on West Channon Drive and a library branch in nearby Minooka. In addition to providing a variety of reading materials for persons of all ages, the library's well-known Snowshoes Story Hour entertains pre-schoolers throughout the year.
The award-winning Channahon Park District provides an assortment of recreational activities. Its Skateland recreation facility features roller skating and other programs, while the Arrowhead Community Center on Eames Street in the Central Park complex has racquetball courts, a fitness center and a pre-school program. The Tomahawk Aquatic Center in Central Park features a six-lane, 25-yard pool, a spray and play area, a sand volleyball court and sunning areas.
Youngsters can also participate in the many sports leagues- soccer, baseball and football- that play throughout the year. There are a number of worthwhile organizations in which residents can become involved. Among these are the Three Rivers Gardening Angels- gardening enthusiasts who meet monthly to discuss gardening issues and to listen to a talk by a gardening expert.
Channahon residents can also participate in the village's Helping Hands program, a not-for-profit organization that provides special assistance, through food drives and other means, to needy residents.
