Located adjacent to the towns of Lisbon, West Friendship, and Woodbine, in rural Western Howard County, Cooksville is known for its scenic rolling hills, thick clusters of shade bearing trees, and lush green pastures. Cooksville's bucolic, retreat-like environment was for many years settled by a few farming families, but since the 1970's has experienced a steady growth in population.
Due to the area's prevalent agricultural heritage, Cooksville and its neighboring towns feature pastoral farm houses with accommodating multi-acre lots, as well as majestic old estate homes dating back from the early 20th century. Most homes in Cooksville, however, were built after the 1970's and are arranged within neatly organized subdivisions. Both older homes and new luxury constructions sit upon at least an acre of land, which varies from wooded lots to expansive open yards. Homes in Cooksville are single family dwellings, most with three to four bedrooms, and come in any number of styles, from quaint clapboard cottages and 1970's era split levels to brick ranchers.
Although Cooksville is primarily a bedroom community for the larger surrounding metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Washington DC, a number of attractions can be found nearby. Just a short drive away from Cooksville is the large suburb of Columbia, with seemingly endless options for dining, shopping, recreation, and culture. The spacious and upscale Mall in Columbia, which features over 230 stores, is a popular shopping destination that draws Marylanders from surrounding counties and the town's 120 restaurants offer an eclectic range of cuisines to satisfy even the pickiest eater. In addition, the famed Merriwether Post Pavilion attracts internationally acclaimed musical acts and entertainers to Columbia each summer.
Residents of Cooksville enjoy the benefits of their inclusion in the Howard County Public School System. Consistently ranked as the best in the state, the Howard County Public Schools have received innumerable awards at the state level. In addition, the town features its own well-regarded private school, Woodmont Academy. While their public and private elementary and secondary schools are top notch, Cooksville is also near the Columbia based satellite campuses of two of Maryland's best universities: Johns Hopkins University and Loyola College of Maryland.
