Catalina, Arizona is a small town of about 5,000 north of Tucson, in between Oro Valley and
Oracle. The land, like much of the land north of Tucson, has been inhabited since 300 A.D. by Native Americans, which then gave way to early American ranchers and farmers. Today, it's still a largely rural area being slowly inhabited by those who want to live near Tucson, but not in it. As a result, many new neighborhoods and developments have gone in as some of the larger landholders sell off pieces of their land. Because Catalina is nestled up against the western edge of Catalina State Park, however, it will never be completely developed, which is appealing to most potential residents.
The majority of homes in this community are older homes with big lots that have been remodeled, and newer homes with slightly smaller lots, but still larger than you'd find in the city. Most yards are xeriscaped - landscaped with desert plants and no ground cover - or feature natural desert plants. Newer homes are Santa Fe style stucco, older homes are more likely to be bricked ranch style houses. Most homes are likely to be backed up to natural desert or state park land than other houses or neighborhoods, creating a calm, country feel.
Amphitheater school district serves this area, a district with 22 schools and over 1,000 teachers. A little over half of the students here are enrolled in one of the 11 elementary schools, so you can tell this is an area with lots of young families. Some large employers are surprisingly close to Catalina, including Northwest Hospital, Honeywell, Sierra Tucson--an internationally known rehab center owned by Miraval-- and many more.
Catalina is also near many fun things to do in Tucson, including Catalina State park, which has miles of trails that go all the way to Mount Lemmon, Native american ruins, horseback riding and camping. The area also includes Breakers Water Park which is Tucson's largest water park along with tons of natural forest and desert to explore.
