Watsonville lies 95 miles south of San Francisco at the southern end of Santa Cruz County, covers 6.6 square miles, is home to about 50,000 residents. Watsonville's colorful history spans many thousands of years, having first been inhabited by the Costanoans, a hunter and gatherer Indian tribe. Remnants of their tribal campsites have been discovered on the Pajaro Dunes and along many coastal valley streambeds.
Today, agriculture and food processing remain the mainstay of the Pajaro Valley economic structure. Yet in keeping with recent trends, a new breadth of opportunity has opened for residents and businesses, including manufacturing, tourism and service oriented businesses. Watsonville is a rich agricultural community famous for its strawberries, apples, and cut flowers. The town is called the "Strawberry Capital of the World."
Watsonville is an area rich in recreational facilities. Watsonville has miles of pristine beaches, state parks and forests. Fourteen parks, varying in size from city blocks to hundreds of acres, are in easy access in the Pajaro Valley. Watsonville is also famous for being close to the epicenter of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The earthquake caused over $35 million in damage.
As with much of the Bay Area, home prices are competitive in Watsonville. Many homes are available with large lots, however some condos are available. Many homes have breathtaking views of the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Approximately half of the residents in Watsonville are homeowners.
Students are served by the schools of the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, where the student to teacher ratio is 20:1. More than 80% of students graduate from high school and more than half go on to advanced education opportunities.
