Rohnert Park was founded as a master-planned community on the former site of the Rohnert Seed Farm. Each neighborhood was designed around a pool, park and/or elementary school. At the time of incorporation, in 1962, Rohnert Park had a population of 2,775, and the city limits encompassed approximately 2.1 square miles.
The city grew quickly as the Bay Area economy continued to grow, and the demand for housing exploded. Today, the city has a population of on of about 41,000 and an area of nearly 6.9 square miles, with nearly half the land dedicated to residential uses. Rohnert Park contains 469 acres of park and recreation land, or approximately 11 percent of the total net city area.
A large portion of this area is contained in the two municipal golf courses--the North Rohnert Park Municipal Golf Course covers 166 acres and the South Rohnert Park Municipal Golf Course covers 144 acres. Recreational facilities also include a large Community Center Complex, Rohnert Park Stadium, Roberts Lake, Senior Citizens center, three neighborhood recreation centers, along with fourteen other parks facilities, most with outdoor pools.
Residents of Rohnert Park are served by the schools in the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District and consistently ranks among the top districts in the state. The district is comprised of eight elementary schools, two award-winning middle schools, a community day school, and four high schools. The district serves approximately 7,000 students. More than 95% of high school seniors graduate, with more than 80% going on for advanced education opportunities.
Rohnert Park is also the home of Sonoma State University and the Sonoma County Crushers Baseball Team. Many people choose to live in the area because of the friendly neighborhoods, commuting convenience and home affordability.
