The town of Hillsborough is an affluent residential suburb located in San Mateo County, California. It is west of Highway 101 and El Camino Real and east of Highway 280 within a short commute to San Francisco and minutes from San Francisco International Airport. Hillsborough was incorporated on May 5, 1910. Hillsborough covers an area of 6.23 square miles and a current population of 10,965. As of the 2000 census, the median household income is above $200,000 a year. The average home sales price in July 2006 was over $3.1 million.
According to the town's website, the town of Hillsborough endeavors to retain the rural country ambience, typified by scenic winding roads, spaciousness and lush vegetation. This is accomplished through carefully considered development guidelines and zoning. In this tradition, the town has enacted zoning regulations to enusre that all lots be a minumim size of one-half acre.
Students are served by the excellent schools of the Hillsborough City School District. The district includes three elementary schools, along with one middle school serving grades six through eight. District studies of Hillsborough graduates indicate that virtually 100% of the students graduate from high school. Parent involvement and participation is extensive and each school in the district has been recognized for consitent high acheivement and test results.
There are also a number of independent schools in Hillsborough, namely The Bridge School, a school serving students with physical and speech impairments; The Nueva School, an elementary school primarily serving gifted and talented students, along with Crystal Springs Uplands School, a college preparatory middle and high school.
The Hillsborough community supports the public school system through the Hillsborough Schools Foundation Annual Giving Campaign. HSF is an integral part of funding for the school district. The Annual Giving Campaign was formed following passage of Proposition 13 and subsequent legislation. Alarmed at the prospect of the potential erosion of quality education in Hillsborough, a group of concerned citizens established one of the first non-profit public school foundations in the country. HSF launched its first campaign in 1980 and quickly became an integral part of school funding in Hillsborough.
