Though a relatively young city, West Sacramento community life dates back to the California gold rush. Recently an influx of new residents have relocated to West Sacramento for a variety of reasons including its central location to downtown Sacramento, University of California at Davis and 45 minute drive to the San Francisco Bay Area.
West Sacramento's residential offerings range from quaint, historic Queen Anne cottages along the river to established neighborhoods on tree-lined streets. Thousands are discovering Southport, the new master-planned residential area in the southern part of the city. Southport offers residential villages linked to parks and recreational trails, neighborhood schools and retail services.
In addition to a wide variety of housing options for families, West Sacramento also offers quality public educational opportunities. The city's commitment to excellence in education is evidenced by recent approval of a $25 million local school bond issue. Higher education is also within easy reach with four community colleges located nearby, including the West Sacramento Center of Sacramento City College. Five universities and numerous private colleges offer specialized degree and occupational training programs.
In addition to quality education, West Sacramento residents also enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities including baseball, boating, fishing, bicycling and more in West Sacramento's 22 neighborhood parks. In the summertime, residents regularly attend River Cats games at Raley Field in addition to downtown culture such as the Sacramento Ballet, Opera and Philharmonic, the Sacramento Community Theater and a wide variety of art and history museums.
Other leisure and entertainment opportunities include fine restaurants, wineries, brew pubs and the Sacramento Kings basketball team at Arco Arena in neighboring Natomas. Sacramentans are enthusiastic sports fans and support professional teams including the beloved NBA Kings, the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs, the Sacramento Knights professional soccer team, and West Sacramento's own River Cats, a Triple A baseball affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. Residents regularly make the short drive to see the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and San Francisco Giants.
The city of West Sacramento not only places special emphasis on recreation but also the development of children by offering a wide spectrum of activities and programs. Youth sports programs include Little League Baseball, girl's softball, swimming, boy's and girl's basketball, street hockey, soccer, rowing and NFL flag football. Eleven different youth sports special events are held annually by the Recreation Department. The Club West Teen Center also offers after school programs and annually host field trips, dances, and club activities.
