Incorporated in 1893, the city of Rocklin is home to over 50,000 residents and growing at a rapid pace. Covering nearly 20 square miles, Rocklin is located 80 miles northeast of San Francisco and 20 miles east of Sacramento.
Rocklin is home to Sierra College, a community college that serves 36,000 students in the Greater Sacramento area. Rocklin offers a strong public school district, a variety of boutique shopping in addition to the massive neighboring Westfield at Galleria mall. Homes available in the area range often feature large lots and range from custom-built state-of-the-art homes to classic Victorians with charm and history.
During the gold rush miners traveled through Rocklin to the gold mines east of Sacramento. When the gold ran out and miners were looking for a business venture an early settler named Hathaway noticed the granite boulders above ground in the Rocklin area and decided to open a quarry. This first Rocklin quarry furnished some of the base core of the California State Capitol. The first loads of granite were hauled by drawn wagons. Later the Central Pacific Railroad arrived in Rocklin in 1864 and granite was hauled by freight car.
In the early 1890's there were about 30 quarries operating at one time, many of these cutting street curbing for the larger cities. Some of the buildings made with Rocklin granite include the United States Mint in San Francisco, part of the state capitol, California National Bank, the Oakland Auditorium, Stockton Courthouse, dry docks at Pearl Harbor and Mare Island and many other buildings. Also many thousands of tons of granite have been used in Sacramento River Levee maintenance. Gold was really the incentive that brought people to the area, although no big gold deposits were ever discovered in the Rocklin area.
Rocklin has a great community recreation programs and a calendar full of events for the whole family including Rocklin girls fast pitch softball, Rocklin Jr. Thunder football and cheer, Rocklin little league, Rocklin youth soccer, Rocklin Wave swim team, Tri City little league.
