Livingston has a vision. The city prides itself on fostering community support and participation. The small, rural city’s safe and quiet atmosphere offers a refuge for many.
Downtown revitalization and restoration efforts have focused at least partially on the Court Theatre. Constructed in 1945, this downtown theatre spurred a council of community members to push for restoration; plans to remodel the theatre to accommodate a Dinner Theatre and community venue were approved recently.
Recent residential and commercial development is apparent; additional plans for new development are forthcoming. The small town has strived to avoid the mistakes of bigger cities and uses modern planning techniques to support city sustainability. Located in Merced County, the city boast a roughly 10,000 strong population. The city offers an unrivaled geographic convenience, just two hours from San Francisco, and on the other side the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Just a short drive from Merced, the city is in close proximity to the local zoo, a science and technology center, even an airplane-focused museum. The area’s rich agriculture is only slightly outdone by the number of possible activities.
The area’s agricultural specialty is diverse, from sweet potatoes to berries, almonds to alfalfa, the area has a variety of crops. Livestock and fowl farms are also pervasive in the area, housing one of the largest poultry companies in the area, Foster Farms.
New housing developments in the area will bring a proposed 1,003 lots to the area; nine new subdivisions are in the process of construction or planning. Upscale subdivisions are in the midst of being planned along the outer edge of the city. Educational opportunities abound, the local high school offers foreign language classes in Spanish, French and Punjabi, and many of the classes of younger students are bilingual. In addition to the system of public schools, Livingston offers a private school just outside the city’s boundaries. A safe and close-knit town, the majority of students live within walking distance of their school.
Community rummage sales and “hamburger nights” demonstrate the type of community bond existent within the city. An indoor paintball arena provides an attractive entertainment option for teenagers and families; Livingston Commons offers a number of retail opportunities for locals and tourists. With three nearby colleges, the newly designed University of California, Merced, Stanislaus State University and Merced Community College, the city hasn’t suffered the “brain drain” that some of the other cities in the area have experienced.
