The city of Tolleson, named for W.G. Tolleson, was incorporated in 1929 by his son Leon. It is a small community of approximately 7,000 people west of Phoenix. This small town was originally an agriculturally based economy like so many others in the metro Phoenix area. Although that has changed today, it still retains that friendly rural small town air.
Tolleson is a town that covers about six square miles, but has over the years grown into a distribution hub for the southwest. The town sits at the intersection of the loop 101 and Interstate 10, making access in all directions incredibly convenient. Large employers such as Sunland Beef, Krogers, Albertsons, Salt River Project, and Sysco Food Systems create extensive employment opportunities for residents and generate good revenue for the town. Tolleson also supports a vibrant manufacturing sector as well, with such employers as Simmons, PepsiCo, Continental Pet Technologies and Landis Plastics.
Finding a home in Tolleson presents the buyer with many different choices. You can still find mini ranches for raising horses and cattle, farm land, larger homes on an acre or two if you simply want room to grow, or you can choose a new home in a master planned community by a number of the valley's most popular builders.
When asked if price was the primary consideration for moving to Tolleson, many residents responded that an equally decisive factor was the closer proximity to other valley attractions, such as the Cardinals and Coyotes stadiums. Living in Tolleson provides an easier commute to downtown Phoenix. Of course, if you have a growing family, it is hard to pass up the opportunity to purchase a nearly new four bedroom home in lovely master planned community, with community parks and amenities in an affordable price range.
Tolleson residents enjoy a median income of just $2,000 below the average for Arizona and a median home price of approximately $70,000 below the average for Arizona. A little known fact is that Tolleson also has one of the lowest percentages of the population living below the poverty level according to numbers for 2008 published on city-data. Tolleson is a community that although virtually unknown outside of the valley, it is a community that offers a wonderful location and is one the valley's most affordable places to live.
