Sun City, "
an extraordinary past and a brilliant future" is the bold opening statement on the Sun City Visitors Center page. Sun City is promoted as "retirement worth looking forward to." Sun City is an unincorporated community that was started in 1960 by Del Webb and exclusively caters to the retired segment of society.
It is a community of approximately 40,000 residents. Residents are known to use golf carts as primary modes of transportation, not only to and from the course, but to the grocery stores, cafes, and even to doctors visits! It was the nations first master planned community exclusively for persons over 55. Today Sun City has a slightly older average age than that of its sister communities Sun City West and Sun City Grand.
Sun City is an immaculate community with well kept streets, of block homes with the now famous painted rock yards accented with cacti. It is the epitome of low maintenance as residents have far better things to do with their time other than slave over yard work. Although Sun City is not quite as active as other newer retirement communities that bill themselves as active adult, their residents still boast of a enjoying their retirement and a great lifestyle.
Sun City has numerous golf courses both public and private. Residents also enjoy many activities offered by the local recreation centers, whose membership rates are extremely reasonable, such as bowling leagues, card and game nights, arts and crafts and swimming. The recreation centers also plan numerous bus tours and take them to such destinations as Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Laughlin, Las Vegas, and even Mexico. The recreation centers have also chartered more than 120 clubs that are representative of a plethora of pastimes, hobbies, and activities.
Although it is a community entirely devoted to serving the needs of its retired residents, grandchildren can visit and a guide to activities they can enjoy with their grandparents is even published on the Sun City official website. Some such activities include playing horseshoes, mini golf, bocce, lawn bowling, swimming, and shuffleboard. There are, of course, rules to ensure the peaceful enjoyment of the community's residents while entertaining visiting grandchildren, but that is to be expected.
Sun City residents are some of the most involved when it comes to volunteering and helping each out. City of Volunteers is more than just a slogan embossed on signs to Sun City. One such organization the Sun City Posse, authorized by Sherriff Joe, patrols Sun City immediately reporting suspicious activities to the Sherriff's department or fire department, makes Sun City one of safest communities in America and saves the community millions each year. It is but one example but certainly one worthy of a mention.
Sun City's seven recreation centers, eight golf courses, three country clubs, two bowling centers, Sun Bowl, and Viewpoint Lake constitute the largest concentration of year round recreational facilities in the United States and a great place to retire.
The average sales price for a single family home or condo in February 2010 was $114,507. This information is gleaned from MLS data, and while deemed reliable, is not guaranteed.
