The City of Maricopa is a city 30 miles south of Phoenix in Pinal County, with a history that goes back to the 1800s. In the mid 1800s, Maricopa Wells was the most well known place in Arizona Territory, as it was an important relay station for the famous Butterfield Overland Mail Route. It was known for having more than ample food and water. The community was truly an oasis in the desert supplying travelers in every direction. It prospered until the rail road came to Arizona.
In the late 1880s, with the arrival of the rail road, a new town sprang up a few miles away around the new station and was called Maricopaville. Gradually the town's folk moved over and all but abandoned Maricopa Wells. The newly located town again was a booming oasis in the desert. Due to Tempe's aggressive negotiating with Phoenix to have a strategic stop on the route, the town of Maricopaville soon moved back to the original site of Maricopa Wells, and became Maricopa Junction. Maricopa Junction became a stop for all east west travelers and its population over the years only grew slowly and stabilized at around a 1,000 people, until the early part of this century after it incorporated in 2003.
The explosive growth of the first half of the decade increased the City of Maricopa's population from just under 5,000 people to over 15,000, literally tripling in just 2.5 years. Currently the population just 4 years later is just under 38,000 people.
