Apache Junction is small community east of Mesa that sprang up as a natural progression, of its location at the junction of the Apache Trail and the main highway between Phoenix and Superior. Nestled against the Superstition Mountain rising up majestically some 3,000 feet above the desert floor, it is a favorite winter home of more than 35,000 winter visitors each year, which brings the towns total population to 77,000. Winter visitors are welcomed each year by the local population, who understand the contribution to their town by these season residents.
Winter visitors come for the warm weather, hospitable locals and the allure of the areas past. It is a past that fascinates those who come simply for the winter or who move permanently to the area. Locals pride themselves as amateur historians and are ever ready to share a story or two with anyone willing to listen. The most famous legend of the area is of the Lost Dutchman Mine. It has been drawing adventurous treasure hunters for more than 100 years. It is but one story of lost treasure, and hardly the only thing that has brought visitors to Apache Junction.
The Goldfield Ghost Town just outside of town is another attraction that brings many new visitors each year. It is was a town that boomed and went bust in 6 short years from 1892 to 1898 when the vein had ceased to produce the quality of ore it once had. The Mining Camp Restaurant is another throwback to the past and a favorite for locals and visitors since 1961. It is a very authentic replica of mining cook shanty from the areas mining glory days, it offers great food in large quantities and is a "must try" experience.
Winter visitors can find reasonable accommodations here. Apache Junction has more than 50 RV parks, many of which cater exclusively to the over 55 age group. Several of which offer a host of activities including horseshoes, shuffleboard, pickle ball, billiards, cards, and much more. They feature heated pools and schedule tours to local attractions, gold panning and casino excursions are favorites. Many other retirees have purchased second homes, in traditional neighborhoods, so they have plenty of room to accommodate visiting family.
Apache Junction is not only a highly desirable mecca for retirees; it is also a community with a vibrant population under the age of 55 that appreciate the area's beauty, its overall affordability, and access to a variety of recreational activities. Whether they desire an affordable home in town or a larger home on an acre of two, on the outskirts of town against the mountain with stunning views and room for toys or horses, Apache Junction has it.
Whether residents want to take their quads to the desert or their boat to the lake they are just a few minutes away from their destination. Horse owners love Apache Junction because they can simply saddle up and enjoy a ride through the surrounding hire desert surrounding the town. They are also only about 30-45 minutes from Tempe, Phoenix, or Scottsdale. Apache Junction is a great town to call home no matter what your age or interests are!
