When the first settlers arrived in this once untamed area of Florida in 1875, their neighbors included bear, wolves, and panthers that traveled along Rock Springs Creek and the Wekiva River. Sorrento’s plentiful pine forests led to the industry of turpentine stills and lumber mills for the first residents of Sorrento. The lyrical name “Sorrento” came from a book titled “Agnes of Sorrento” that describes the fruits and flowers of Italy’s Sorrento so beautifully that the residents of these rolling hills were inspired to name their new town by a majority vote in honor of this book.

Sorrento is part of Lake County’s Public School System. Nearby colleges and universities to Sorrento include Stetson University sited approximately 22 miles away in Deland and the University of Central Florida in Orlando is located approximately 27 miles away in Orlando.
