The clock tower in the Longwood Historic District overlooks a picturesque town of over approximately 13,700 residents who call Longwood, Florida home. Towering Oak trees with flowing Spanish moss fill the quaint town of Longwood where hometown charm is abundant throughout. Ideally located in Seminole County, Longwood is 15 miles north of the metropolis of Orlando.
The earliest settlers to the Longwood area arrived in the early 1870s. One of the early founders of Longwood was E.W. Henck who worked on several projects including railroads, hotels, and real estate. Mr. Henck served with the honor guard that accompanied President Abraham Lincoln's body on the train trip from Washington to Illinois. On May 19, 1876, the Longwood Post Office was established with Henck as the first postmaster. Henck chose the name Longwood after a suburb of Boston, which had special meaning to him because as a young engineer he helped lay out that town. Ten years later, thanks to Henck’s efforts, Longwood had five churches, three hotels, eight stores, and a newspaper that was published weekly.
Today, Longwood has many amenities for its growing population including a number of beautiful city parks that boast many amenities including playgrounds, fishing, picnic areas, tennis courts, and scenic trails. Longwood offers many activities for neighbors to take advantage of including car shows; art classes; summer camp for kids; and youth sports such as karate, golf, and baseball. Lockwood’s senior citizens have several opportunities to make new friends at the Spring Fling Dance, Ice Cream Socials, AARP Driver Safety Classes, Senior Matinee Movies, and Jazzercise Lite classes.
Seminole County Public Schools in Lockwood include Longwood Elementary, Woodlands Elementary, Highlands Elementary, Altamonte Elementary, Milwee Middle, Rock Lake Middle, Markham Woods Middle, Greenwood Lakes Middle, Lyman High, Winter Springs High, and Lake Mary High. Rollins College is seven miles from Lockwood and the University of Central Florida is approximately 11 miles.
