First settled as a military outpost in 1839, Lake Alfred was better known in those days as Fort Cummings. The fort closed in 1840 and this region became remote once again. In 1887 the railroad came through Lake Alfred and created new jobs in this region. However, it was in 1907 when the J.C. Cox family moved to Lake Alfred and obtained two 40 acre citrus groves that the citrus age began in Lake Alfred and the city saw its first real growth.
The city was named Lake Alfred in 1913 after the large lake in the area. Today, a serene bedroom community for commuters to Orlando and Tampa, Lake Alfred is also a town with its own businesses including a mix of traditional retail and service industries as well as many specialty businesses. Lake Alfred also has a very popular antique shopping area.
The area around Interstate 4 in Lake Alfred has been approved for environmentally friendly subdivisions to be built. Several new residential developments are already being constructed inside the city limits, while Lake Alfred’s older neighborhoods have recently received some special attention with new sidewalks, paths, and street lights that encourage walking to nearby restaurants, shops, and parks.
Part of Polk County’s Public Schools, Lake Alfred is home to 10 different magnet schools which offer specialized programs in subjects like science, technology, and the performing arts. Students must apply to be apart of these schools. Nearby colleges include Florida Southern College in Lakeland and the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
