Astatula, an Indian term meaning "lake of sunbeams," "lake of moonbeams," and "people of different tribes," is the ideal location for those looking to escape the crowds of Florida's more populated cities. Considered part of the Orlando metropolitan area, Astatula is approximately one hour from Orlando International Airport and about 90 minutes northeast of Tampa.
Located in lovely Lake County, Astatula is one of several rural towns in this county that are known for their friendly hometown charm, amazing outdoor life, and strong community pride. Several generations of native Floridians are not hard to find in Astatula, where tree-lined streets and historic clapboard houses set the scene for this Americana town.
While the majority of Florida is geographically flat, Lake County is the exception; with its slightly higher elevation, it has lovely rolling hills that are a fun adventure for hikers, bikers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. More outdoor adventures can be found at Little Lake Harris which boasts approximately 2,739 acres and has public boat access at Astatula Park. A fisherman's paradise, Little Lake Harris regularly gives up Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, and Black Crappie.
As of the 2000 census, there were 1,298 people, 482 households, and 359 families that call Astatula home. That estimated population today is considerably higher at 2,092. Homeowners in Astatula benefit from lower real estate taxes than most other towns in Florida.
Astatula is home to one pubic elementary school, Astatula Elementary School for the Arts, which was established in 1999. Serving pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, this school integrates art into the traditional curriculum to include enrichment classes such as art, drama, graphic arts, music, media center, and physical education. Lake County has 11 middle schools and nine high schools throughout the county. If moving to Astatula with school-age children, check with your realtor to determine which one of these Lake County educational facilities would serve your child's educational needs.
In August 2008, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Astatula, FL was $153,000. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
