The Woodlands is an exclusive mixed-use master planned community 30 miles north of downtown Houston. The combination of an idyllic forested setting; wide variety of homes, outdoor recreation, excellent schools, convenient shopping and other amenities has made the Woodlands a highly desirable community for over 30 years. The Woodlands is famous for incorporating the piney woods surrounding it with urban and suburban development. The brainchild of esteemed landscape architect and author, Ian McHarg, who independently consulted on the project, the Woodlands is consistently cited as one of the best master-planned communities in the country. As a result, the Woodlands is also one of the fastest-growing communities in Texas with an estimated population of 75,000. The median household income for the Woodland's area remains well above that for the Houston area as a whole, hovering near $89,000. Housing prices range from the low $80's to a high end of $3.5 million for homes in the more exclusive golf resort communities. The most well known perhaps is the prestigious Woodlands Country Club, which holds the distinction of being the only golf club in the nation to have six world-class golf courses. Woodlands is unique in its incorporation of business and retail land use within its design. This pragmatic view of the Woodlands as a "living community" – where resident's basic needs are located within the community itself, cutting down commute times and generating a self-sustaining economy. As a result many new companies are calling the Woodlands home including On Center Software, Anadarko, Hewitt Associates and Chicago Bridge \& Iron. The Woodlands Town Center is the area's business and retail district. Sitting on the west side of Interstate 45, Town Center is home to The Woodlands Mall, an indoor retail development, and Market Street, an outdoor retail center designed to evoke an urban setting. The Town Center also includes two Cinemark movie theatres and The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel \& Convention Center. Several commercial structures are also here, including The Woodlands tallest building, the Anadarko Tower. Fine restaurants abound around a waterway reminiscent of San Antonios Riverwalk. The community operates and maintains more than 124 miles of hike and bike paths, more than 90 parks, 12 swimming pools, more than 1,800 acres of open space and The Woodlands Recreation Center. The Woodlands lies almost entirely in Houstons extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) with a small portion located in the city limits of Shenandoah. The Woodlands is located in the Conroe Independent School District, with the highly rated Woodlands High School being the primary feeder. The school ranked 567th out of 20,000 schools in a recent Newsweeks survey of the Best High Schools in America. Ample selections of private schools are also located in the Woodlands area.
