Sheldon is located 20 miles northeast of Houston, along Highway 90 between the San Jacinto River and Greens Bayou. Sheldon has a rich history as an early trading post providing essential dry goods, postal and telegraph services for the early settlers of the area. In its early years, Sheldon was isolated, heavily wooded and sparsely populated. The only thoroughfare into downtown Houston was a narrow dirt road. When the occasional trip to Houston was necessary for supplies, it took six to eight hours by horse and wagon. Today Sheldon has a booming population of 18,039. Gone are the days when trapping and trading provided the chief income for the early settlers. At the northern tip of the Houston Shipping Channel, Sheldon is considered part of the North Channel Area. The small towns and communities that comprise the North Channel area share interest in the Port of Houston's powerful shipping economy. The 25-mile-long Port of Houston industry is a complex of diversified facilities designed for handling general cargo, containers, grain, and other dry bulk materials, project and heavy lift cargo. The North Channel Area supplies these services for the northern half of the Houston shipping Channel. Made up almost entirely of owner occupied single family housing, the assortment is broad for residence choices. Although Sheldon does not have its own police service, it is locally served by the Harris County Precinct 3 Constables Office, and is also served by the Harris County Sheriffs Department. Sheldon residents are zoned to Sheldon Independent School District. Sheldon's convenient access to an outstanding highway system makes Houston's sports, entertainment and arts readily available, and gives residents the advantage of urban amenities to complement the area's hometown suburban setting.
