American Idol winner and now Superstar, Kelly Clarkson, has been credited for putting the city of Burleson on the map. The city, just south of Fort Worth, was founded in 1881 and was named for Dr. Rufus C. Burleson, President of Baylor University in Waco, Texas. The official incorporation as a town came in 1912, and Burleson became a "city" in 1938. Through the years, Burleson's population has grown to over 30,000. A commercial hub for Johnson County, it is known as "one of the most livable communities in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex."
Some of Burleson's best kept secrets include the Fossil Rim Wildlife Reserve and the Russell Farm Art Center. The Wildlife Reserve offers an opportunity to discover wildlife in their natural environments. Located just one hour and 20 minutes from Dallas/Fort Worth, the 1800 acres facility encourages interaction with deer, rhinos, giraffes and other wildlife. The Russell Farm Art Center brings families and the world of art together in a simple, and historic setting. Visitors to the center can tour the galleries, attend seminars, and participate in workshops and classes.
The Burleson Heritage Foundation, a local historical preservation and educational organization, actively serves the community's cultural needs and sponsors many family-oriented activities throughout the year including Honeyfest, Cinco de Mayo, The Hot Sounds of Summer Concert Series, a Fourth of July Parade, a Christmas Parade, and more. Families choose Burleson for the strong sense of community, proximity to the metroplex, excellent schools, and low crime rate. Burleson is just 12 short miles from Fort Worth.
The city of Burleson is served by the Burleson Independent School District and the Joshua Independent School District. Schools within the BISD were recently rated as Acceptable and Recognized by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) in 2006. Burleson Independent School District is one of the premier school districts in the DFW Metroplex.
The BISD serves an ever-growing population of students in the southern Tarrant, northern Johnson County area. The mission of the Burleson Independent School District, an innovative partnership with parents and community, is to prepare each student to be a responsible, contributing citizen, able to achieve maximum personal potential and embrace change by addressing individual student differences through exemplary curriculum, programs, and staff in a progressive and safe environment
