The Cook County village of Westchester is known for its many recreational activities, variety of housing styles, access to major expressways, and a group of dedicated volunteers who contribute money and time to ensure that the town's schools, library system, emergency care, and recreational activities are top-notch.
Westchester is located approximately 15 miles from downtown Chicago. Nearby towns include Broadview, Hillside and Berkeley to the north, Elmhurst and Lombard to the west and Oak Brook, La Grange Park and Brookfield to the south. The population of Westchester is 16,824 (2000).
Westchester contains colonial, bungalow, traditional and ranch-style single-family homes that are located in such neighborhoods as Mayfair, Westchester Club, Ashley Woods, The Courtyards, and Prescott Square. Two, three and four-bedroom single-family homes range in price from $250,000 to $800,000 or more, and can be found near schools, parks and regional shopping areas. Stately homes range in price from $900,000 to $4 million dollars or more. There is also some land available for custom-built homes. Condominiums and townhouses are priced from $100,000 to $400,000 or higher.
In their spare time, villagers can participate in a variety of recreational activities. The Westchester Community Center on Bond Street is maintained by the Westchester Park District, and houses a 7,000-square-foot gymnasium, along with a preschool and after-school facilities. Day care services are also provided by the Community Center.
The Westchester Park District also oversees two village parks and a 50-meter outdoor swimming pool that features a 12-foot-deep diving well and a separate zero-depth wading pool. The pool also has a 25-foot-high, 150-foot-long water slide and an interactive water play structure in the shallow end. There's also a concession stand and a grassy area at the facility.
At the Park District's Mayfair fitness, recreation and banquet facility, residents can utilize a state-of-the-art fitness center, which is equipped with a circuit strength system, free weights, treadmills, step machines, stationery bicycles, rowing machines, and other assorted cardiovascular exercise equipment. There's also a babysitting room provided for members' children for a nominal charge.
